About R J Barry Custom Homes

In 1954 with encouragement from his wife Georgia, Richard “Dick” Barry left his job as a tool and die maker to pursue his dream of building homes. With Richard working in the field and Georgia running the office their dream became a reality. Today, nearly sixty years and three generations later R J Barry is among the finest of the St. Louis custom home builders.

In 1971 Richard and Georgia’s son Curt joined the company as a carpenter apprentice. Over the next ten years he would take control of the day to day operations of the company. Then, in 2004, their daughter Candy came to work with the family to manage the growing amount of office work. In 2008 upon completion of his Construction Management degree from SIU Edwardsville, Curt’s son Justin joined the R J Barry team and began the third generation of family involvement.

Quality craftsmanship has been a top priority for RJ Barry since 1954. Thus, RJ Barry takes a different approach than most builders to ensure that quality is built into each home. First, the quantity of homes that are built at the same time are limited. This ensures that close supervision is given on every aspect of the building process. Second, R J Barry employs its own union carpenters. These carpenters perform complete construction of the home, from framing to finish.

Today, although Richard is still very involved in the company, Curt and Candy have taken over the day to day operations. While Curt controls the scheduling and construction process, Candy operates the main office and works with customers. While Justin is a union carpenter he is also learning the inner workings of the company. The business is still run with the same mission instilled by their parents, “To build quality homes for their customers that will exceed their expectations.”
